Two of Cork Institute of Technology’s research centres, the Technologies for Embedded Computing (TEC@NIMBUS) Centre and the Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA), will be exhibiting at the National Digital Week 2016 being held in Skibbereen, Co. Cork from the 10th to 12th November. Organised by the Ludgate Hub, The National Digital Week is a 3 day series of digital events featuring a host of world class speakers and fantastic entertainment. Taking place in the unique, rural location of Skibbereen and coinciding with the roll-out of 1Gb broadband there, the event highlights that digital innovation is the future of rural Ireland.
Both CAPPA and Nimbus host Enterprise Ireland-funded Technology Gateways, whose remit is to deliver technology solutions for Irish industry. CAPPA works in the area of photonics, the science of generating, controlling and detecting light, which forms the backbone of fibre-optic telecommunications but also underpins areas such as sensing, detection and imaging. The Nimbus Centre carries out research and innovation in the field of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). CPS use sensors, electronics, computing and communication to link the physical world, the people in it and the cyber world of the Internet. CPS technologies power the Internet of Things, Industrial Automation and Robotics, Autonomous Vehicles, Green Energy, e-Health and other smart applications that are the driving force of the emerging “Fourth Industrial Revolution”. Nimbus is focused on practical application of CPS to solve challenging real world problems, particularly in Energy, Water and Smart Cities & Communities. Together, CAPPA and Nimbus have been providing R&D services to local and regional companies since 2008, ranging from short-term consultancy to large, collaborative research projects.
Nimbus is also partnering with the Ludgate Hub to offer a drop-in advisory service for entrepreneurs and start-ups from November 9th. Running on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month in Ludgate, our technology expert Stuart Elder will be available to discuss how Nimbus can help apply technology to businesses and to assist with preparing submissions for the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher Programme. Stuart will offer start-ups and SME’s independent advice on choosing the right kind of technology, and what to look for when researching a technology provider. Thematic talks will also be given on selected dates TBD.
At their exhibition stand, CAPPA will showcase some of the advanced laser imaging, non-invasive optical sensors and remote sensing technologies they have developed for applications in the medical devices, pharmaceutical and food industries. Researchers from CAPPA will be on hand to discuss how photonics can provide solutions for your business, and the funding options available for joint research projects.
