The Cork Institute of Technology invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Research Assistant in the area of Secure Connected Trustable Things at Nimbus Centre.The Nimbus Centre has over 70 staff and is involved in an extensive range of applied research and innovative projects with partners across Europe. We have a broad portfolio of projects in the Internet of Things and Smart City space covering domains such as Energy, User Behaviour and Interaction, Transport, Security, Water and Industry 4.0. This is a very vibrant sector of the Irish technology economy and the growth of the centre’s multi-disciplinary team reflects this. Nimbus is based in a large purpose built facility on the CIT campus with state of the art research equipment.The Centre has recently obtained funding in from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking programme to conduct research and development in a project on secure connected trustable things. The project focuses on secure connected trustable solutions in various application domains, and the Nimbus Centre will contribute to connectivity solutions in the railway domain in particular. The Centre is now looking for a highly motivated and skilled individual for this project. Reporting to the Nimbus Centre project Principle Investigator the successful candidate will be responsible for investigating suitable approaches to provide Quality of Service for on-board communication systems in railways and their uplink to cloud-based services such as remote monitoring and maintenance.Essential Criteria:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electronic/Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline.

Desirable Criteria:

Strong analytical skills
Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas is essential: wireless/mobile communication systems and protocols, network protocols, Quality of Service
Software development skills in one or more of the following languages and systems: C/C++, Python, Linux
Fluent in spoken and written English
Ability to work well both in a team environment and on his/her own initiative to solve technical, logistical and system integration problems
Ability to deliver on project deadlines
Practical, assertive and achievement orientated. Good self-management, report writing and communication skills for interaction with project partners are essential
Ability to work flexible hours as required and be adaptable to changing working practices
Knowledge and experience in the areas of virtualisation and security are an advantage

Successful applicants without a postgraduate degree have the opportunity to register and study for such degree (part-time) at Cork Institute of Technology.

Salary: €26,915.00 to €28,452.00 per annum
